Indoor Air Quality on Construction Sites
Indoor air quality (IAQ) is becoming a significant issue in construction, especially during refurbishments and work in occupied buildings. Many sites still rely on natural ventilation, use unsuitable vacuum units, and allow dust to linger – problems that worsen in colder months when windows stay closed.
Recent site visits show recurring issues:
- Use of L-class vacuums instead of legally required M-class units, and limited on-tool extraction.
- Poor airflow in internal and basement areas, resulting in dust build-up and uncomfortable working conditions.
- Dust migrating into occupied spaces due to inadequate sealing and containment.
- Inadequate or non-compliant filtration in extraction equipment.
Key recommendations include:
- Incorporate IAQ considerations into COSHH and RAMS planning.
- Use compliant M-class vacuums and effective on-tool extraction.
- Improve ventilation in enclosed spaces with mechanical solutions.
- Prevent dust spread into live areas through sealing, barriers and good housekeeping.
- Maintain clean work areas to stop settled dust becoming airborne again.
