Effective Strategies for Fall Prevention and Protection in Construction

Falls remain one of the most frequent causes of serious injury in construction – and we continue to see the same issues repeated on site. From podiums and towers left without brakes applied, to castor wheels used to gain extra height, to steps used for long durations in open spaces, these are simple problems that can be fixed through better planning, supervision, and training.

At MLA, we support clients every week with fall-prevention reviews, work-at-height training, and practical site advice.

Here are a few focus areas that make a measurable difference:

Plan ahead

Identify work-at-height tasks early, prior to works commencing. Confirm access methods and sequencing before the first operative arrives on site.

Provide the correct equipment

Check that towers and podiums are assembled correctly and fitted with all necessary components – toe-boards, guardrails, brakes, and outriggers. MLA inspections continue to find towers missing key safety elements.

Train every worker

Ensure teams are competent to assemble and use podiums, towers, and MEWPs safely. MLA provides on-site sessions covering correct management/assembly/use of access equipment.

Enforce and reinforce

A good fall-prevention plan depends on active supervision. Toolbox talks, equipment checks, and visible leadership make the difference between "paper compliance" and genuine control.

When it comes to work at height, prevention is protection.
