Hot Weather: Essential Health & Safety Precautions for Site Teams

Dear Client

We hope this message finds you well.

With more high temperatures forecast across the UK over the following week, we are issuing a Hot Weather Warning to all construction sites. Extreme heat presents serious health risks, especially for those working outdoors or in enclosed environments.

Please take immediate steps to safeguard your workforce by implementing the following controls:

Recommended Hot Weather Controls:

1. Hydration

  • Provide cool, clean drinking water on all sites.
  • Encourage workers to drink regularly — before they feel thirsty.

2. Rest Breaks

  • Schedule frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas.
  • Rotate tasks to reduce prolonged sun exposure.

3. PPE Adjustments

  • Allow breathable, lighter PPE where safe and compliant.
  • Ensure high-visibility and protective gear still meets requirements.

4. Early Start Times

  • Adjust working hours to avoid peak afternoon heat where feasible.

5. Sun Protection

  • Provide SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  • Encourage wearing wide-brimmed hats and UV-protective eyewear.

6. Improve Ventilation

  • Increase airflow in enclosed or semi-enclosed workspaces.
  • Use portable fans or ventilation systems to reduce heat buildup in cabins, welfare units, and site offices.

7. Monitor for Heat-Related Illness

  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke:
    1. Dizziness, nausea, confusion, heavy sweating, rapid pulse.
  • Ensure first aiders are briefed and emergency procedures are in place.

A Legal Reminder:

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, employers are legally obligated to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of their employees — including during periods of extreme weather.

If you need help updating your risk assessments or implementing site-specific controls, our team is here to assist.

Stay safe, stay cool, and please circulate this message to all site supervisors and workers.
